The seventh Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, London

"Visitors are invited to ascend from the lawn to the roof via the ramp, which functions as a mediator between the Pavilion interior and its surroundings. Whilst journeying upwards, they will first encounter the interior space, which is followed by an enclosed stretch of the ramp with the surroundings only glimpsed through the louvered facade." www.nhit-shis.org

"The ramp, meanwhile, continues to climb outside and around the great conical chamber, at first shaded by twisted sails made of white nylon rope, and then entirely in the open. This winding walkway offers slowly changing perspectives of the park, and of its trees as it climbs above them, and of the Serpentine Gallery itself - which appears to be dwarfed by the pavilion. At the top, visitors are led back inside the chamber to stand precipitously on a tiny viewing platform high above the people who have gathered to participate in Eliasson and Thorsen's "laboratories"."

"The Serpentine Pavilion 2007 is a spectacular and dynamic building. This timber-clad structure resembles a spinning top and brings a dramatic new vertical dimension to the traditional single level Pavilion. A wide spiralling ramp makes two complete turns, ascending from the Gallery lawn to the seating area and continues upwards, culminating at the highest point in a view across Kensington Gardens as well as down into the chamber below."
